Flash Memory
• A type of nonvolatile memory that can be erased electronically and rewritten.
• Flash memory chips are a type of solid state media
solid state media:
-electronic components (integrated circuits)
-no moving parts ( making the flash memory storage more durable and shock resistant than other types of media such as magnetic hard disks or optical discs)

Types of Flash Memory Storage
Solid State Drives (SSD)
A storage device that typically uses flash memory to store data, instructions, and information.
Available sizes: 3.5 inches, 2.5 inches & 1.8 inches Storage capacity range: 16 GB to 256 GB and more Solid State Drives are used in all types of computers (servers, desktop computers, and mobile computers) and devices (portable media players and digital video cameras). |
Compared to a magnetic hard disk, the following are its advantages and disadvantages.
ADVANTAGES:
•Access times: 0.1 ms (more than 80 times faster than a hard disk)
•Transfer rates faster
•They generate less heat and consume less power
•Could last more than 50 years compared to the hard disk stated lifespan of 3-5 years
DISADVANTAGES:
•Have higher rate of failure
•The greater the GB, the higher the cost

Memory Cards
A removable flash memory device, usually no bigger than 1.5 inches in height or width. They are inserted and removed from a slot in a computer, mobile device, or card reader/writer. They enable mobile users easily to transport digital photos, music, or files to and from mobile devices and computers or other devices. |
Common Types of Memory Cards:
•CompactFlash (CF) •Secure Digital (SD) •Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) •microSD |
